I love animals, nature, hiking, photography, music(80's alternative, classic rock, some modern alternative,) computers, Tivo, Channel Islands National Park, the Carpinteria Bluffs, bicycling, the ocean, volunteering, exercising, SeaWorld, kayaking, life...
Keeping busy these days. I'm volunteering with the seal watch at the Caprinteria Harbor Seal Sanctuary.
I recently took beginning sailing lessons, so if you've got a boat and need a crew, feel free to get in touch with me.
Recently went kayaking at Anacapa island, as well as snorkeling and hiking at Santa Cruz island. The California Gray whales are beginning their migration to Baja Mexico, so of course I've been going whale watching.
I enjoy riding my bike down to the beach, and taking my spotted pup for walks at the Carpinteria Bluffs. I'm also exploring Buddhism & meditation

An unusual visitor to the Santa Barbara Harbor...
There have been reports on CNN and other news programs of a juvenile Gray whale who seems to be vacationing in the Santa Barbara Harbor for almost 2 weeks now. Of course I had to see this for myself, so after my shift at the Gray Whale Migration Count today up in Goleta (saw 4 whales during my 2 hour shift) I decided to stop by the harbor on the way home.
I walked out on the wharf in the harbor and didn't take long to spot the whale just past the break water! I saw this silly little pirate boat going out there and saw how close they were getting to the whale, so I decided I need to take the last 25 minute voyage before sunset. So the little pirate boat takes us out just past the break water, we stopped and waited maybe a minute and then the whale (the crew affectionately call "Paycheck") showed up, I was so freakin' excited (no surprise! ) The whale was about 30 feet from us! This juvenile is about 15 to 20 feet long. It blew then went under and we waited another minute or so then it came back up, this time about 15 feet from us! Every time it came back up it was getting closer, and the boat was hardly moving. At one point the whale was within a few feet of us! The whale does not show any signs of illness, injury, or distress in anyway and seemed quite comfortable coming up close to the boats. That was the most exciting 15 minutes I have had, and what a bargain it only cost $10!
I will say that I am very concerned for this beautiful creature. There is so much boat traffic right where the whale is. I sure don't want anything to happen to it or the human observers and boaters. I will say that I was a little concerned with how close the boat I was in came to the whale, but the whale approached the boat on it's own. This can be an amazing experience or can become very dangerous. I really hope this vacationing whale departs the harbor soon and continues it's journey up north.
And of course I took pictures of the amazing visit with the whale!

Well folks I finally did it, I got my first tattoo!
For years I pondered about getting one, but I could never make up my mind on what it would be of and where I'd put it. I never seriously pursued it. But yesterday my friend said she was going to have on added to her small collection and invited me along. I told her I always thought of having one, so she suggested I talk with her tattoo artist. I knew right away that I wanted a marine mammal tattoo, hmmm...perhaps a dolphin? So I started checking out pics of dolphin tattoos online to get an idea, then printed a bunch of photos of dolphins in the wild. Then it hit me, something I love just as much as dolphins but less common as a tattoo...a whale! So at the last minute I printed a bunch of photos of whale flukes of all types and different backgrounds.
So I talked with Jesse at The Inkhouse here in Ventura while he worked on my friends tattoo. Showed him and another tattoo artist the pics I had of dolphins and whale flukes. Everyone agreed it had to be a whale's fluke, they had never seen anyone with a whale fluke tattoo. I decided it was now or never, I was getting my first tattoo!
I talked with Jesse and told him how much I loved watching the sun setting on the way back from whale watching and how much I loved the mauve, gold, and purple tones in the sky and how they reflected on the water. And decided it would go on my right calf (since I've been working out regularly they have been getting nicely toned.) He took a few minutes and drew my vision. I loved it!
Let the inking begin. It wasn't that bad, it was like an annoying scratching. Jesse was pretty quick and talking with my friend helped pass the time quickly. Then it was done. Before it was done I was already thinking about what the next tattoo would be! Kudos to Jesse for making it an easy experience and doing a great job of bringing my vision to a reality.
My close friends know what a nature lover I am, so this tattoo represents my passion very well. I am very happy I got it and proud to say that I have a tattoo! A question that comes up when I'm talking to people is "Do you have any tattoos?" and when I told them "no" they would looked puzzled, I guess because of my hair and all my earrings people always thought I would. Well now I do!
Now for the healing, looking forward to the scabs and itchys...not. So when the healing is done I'll be sure to take more pictures. I guess it will be short pants for me!

A great set of photography. A lot of those photos show that there is so much anger in this world, I wish it wasn't that way. I think I need to go visit the random kitten generator to put a smile on my face.
